Let’s talk Pace of Play!  Golfers of all skill levels should be able to get around the golf course at a reasonable pace and not hold up groups behind you.  Playing golf at a better pace is not about hurrying up or rushing around the course. It is simply about being more efficient with your valuable time, as well as everyone else’s. Adopting this tip of the month and not being afraid to share it with your fellow players will ultimately add enjoyment to your golf experience.

Minimize your time on the tee, plan your shot before getting to your ball, keep your routine, and aim to play in 20 seconds or less. On the tee it is usually acceptable for players to “hit when ready.” You can also save time by…

April Showers

I don’t know if you’ve heard the term of the title. I have heard it for many years. Water is a very precious resource. Rainfall is a must for a healthy start to the spring to summer season. Our survival and well-being of our communities, crops, gardens, lawns, and golf courses depend on the rainfalls we receive for our water reservoirs and water table.   Our central Texas climate…

Spring GreenUp

By: Wayne Slaton, Golf Course Superintendent

As we look to warmer temperatures returning, our golf course turf begins to wake up from winter dormancy. We are preparing to do the best we can to help our golf course playing surfaces perform well.  This is more than just irrigation, or “watering the grass”. Much planning goes into preparing our golf course for the spring to summer playing season….

Course Played as It Is Found

Rule 8 covers a central principle of the game: “play the course as you find it.” When the player’s ball comes to rest, they normally must accept the conditions affecting the stroke and not improve them before playing the ball. However, a player may take certain reasonable actions even if they improve those conditions, and there are limited circumstances where the conditions may be restored without penalty after they have been improved or worsened.

The USGA has produced a great brief video on the basics of course care.  If we all follow these practices, we help keep the course is the best possible condition.   It’s not just for new golfers, we all need a reminder now and then.   Please take 2 minutes and click here to view.

DJ has worked in the golf industry for over 9 years with the last 7 years at Crystal Falls.   He is a Certified Irrigation Technician and helps keep water flowing through the pipes to provide the best possible growing environment for the health of our course.   DJ has 2 children and also enjoys the feel of our family environment here at the golf course.

We’re getting closer to identifying a new food and beverage partner for the clubhouse and we appreciate everyone’s patience in this slow but deliberate process. We hope to be up and running with great food and a full bar within the next 90 days or so! We’d like to announce the arrival of an additional food truck, The Holy Grill, that opened for business beginning August 2, 2024. Our friends at Sibil’s Ribs-N-More are still serving up some great food as well!  You may view both of their menus here. Thanks again for supporting these great local food trucks!

Have you checked your point standings recently for the 2024 Crystal Cup Series?    Our Summer ParTee tournament on August 12 is the last chance to qualify for the 2nd Annual Crystal Cup Invitational. (Yes, participation is by invitation only!)

Welcome back high school golfers!   Crystal Falls is the home course for three Leander ISD high schools, Glenn, Leander and Rouse.  You’ll find these student athletes teeing off from 2:30-4:00 p.m. Monday – Thursday and also on the practice range those days from 2:30-4:30 p.m.

Make time to improve your game.   Our practice area opens daily at 7:00 a.m. and we discontinue selling range balls 1 hour before sunset. On Tuesday, we discontinue selling range balls two (2) hours prior to sunset to conduct a clean pick; and the range reopens Wednesday morning by 11:00 a.m. after maintenance is completed.  Stop in the clubhouse to purchase a ticket for range balls, available in 3 sizes ranging from $5 – $15

Rule 13 – Putting Green

Rule 13 is a specific Rule for putting greens. Putting greens are specially prepared for playing the ball along the ground and there is a flagstick for the hole on each putting green, so certain different Rules apply than for other areas of the course. The Rule allows a player to do things on the putting green that are normally not allowed off the putting green, such as being allowed to mark, lift, clean and replace a ball and to repair damage and remove sand and loose soil on the putting green. Did you know there is no penalty for accidentally causing a ball or ball-marker to move on the putting green?  Click Here to learn more from the USGA

“Keep your hands low”

1. I am sure you’ve heard the advice “hit down on the ball to make it go up” before. I’m not a big fan of this advice for amateur players, because while it comes from a good place, it leads to golfers driving the club straight down into the ground and hitting fat shots and damaging the golf clubs you spend so much money on!

2. Keeping your hands “low” forces you to create lag in your downswing, and to drive your legs up at impact to deliver the clubface to the ball.

3. This ensures that you’ll hit the ball first and then take a nice tidy divot while you watch your shot soar right at your target. Keeping your hands low keeps the clubface square for as long as possible through the hitting zone. No matter how you get it there, a square clubface is a must to produce a good golf shot.

4. If you are struggling with consistent ball striking, give this swing thought and feel a try on the range!

February and Yellow Turf

By: Wayne Slaton, Golf Course Superintendent

As the wind of the North has not let up, you gaze upon the yellow dormant Bermuda grass turf of our golf course.  We are getting closer every day to an awakening of the dormant Bermuda turf with hopefully spring rain events.  Non-overseeded areas of our golf course are in full yellow dormant mode after the mid-January cold.  Dormant fairways enjoy the extra yardage on the tee ball, yet our overseeded areas on fairways/roughs are so that extra roll does not find your golf ball rolling out too much and stopping in the penalty areas….

If your opponent can’t remember if they shot a six or a seven on a hole, chances are they had an eight.

Gabe Galaviz, Greenskeeper I

You may recall meeting Gabe in person 2 years ago when he first joined the team at Crystal Falls Golf Club and was working part-time as a Golf Shop Attendant.  He later moved to a role in Guest Services, and you started seeing him around the cart barn and practice area.  Gabe moved to a full-time position with our Golf Course Maintenance Team 3 months ago, his favorite role to date.  His new early morning start time allows more opportunity for him to pursue his passion for playing golf.  Would you be surprised to learn that his dog is named, Caddie?  His broad personal experience in various areas of golf course operations make him a valuable member of the team.

Facility renovations are wrapping for the Cork & Barrell and we are looking forward to them opening within the next month.

2025 kicked off with the Polar Bear Open and competitors conquered weather befitting of the event’s name!  This 2-person scramble was won by Dennis Sokol and Rithy Khem with an 8 under 64 for a 1 shot win over Minh and Emmy Tran.  Richard Himmer and Chad Brown took top honors on the net side after winning a scorecard playoff over John Pate and Tony Piercey.  Payouts were made to the top 5 teams for both gross and net places with the $300 Net Skins Pool divided between 5 teams.  In total, participants took home $1,340 in merchandise gift cards with everyone getting on the board with 2025 Crystal Cup season points.  Click Here to see the full leaderboard.
